The Defenders is a celebration of the Royal Canadian Airforce’s 100th anniversary and embodies a first time revelation of the RCAF’s role in the defence of the State of Alaska on behalf of the United States. On the day after the Pearl Harbour attack, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt phoned Canada’s then Prime Minister, McKenzie King, asking for desperately needed fighter squadrons to be sent to Alaska to thwart the enemy’s bold attempt to invade North America from troop landings on the Aleutian Islands. Canada’s response was to immediately deploy six fighter squadrons to Alaska, a mix of P-40 Kittyhawks and Hawker Hurricanes plus a few Bollingbroke medium bombers. Canada had been at war for two years and Roosevelt knew Canada had the resources to provide this urgent assistance, which proved to be absolutely crucial to thwarting the enemy’s invasion of Alaska and ultimately of the British Columbia coast.
